King William's Statue, Petersfield, Hampshire
The town of Petersfield, founded in the early 12th century, is dominated by a large square presided over by a statue of King William lll. In Arthur Mee's pre-war guide to Hampshire he says "The King sits on horseback on a high stone pedestal, a Dutch King of England looking and dressed like a Roman!". The statue was donated by a local benefactor and erected in the square a few years before the Battle of Waterloo. |
